You Found Your Life Purpose - Now What? 4 comments

Finding your life purpose is not hard. What you do with it is what makes all the difference.

There are multiple ways to find out why you are here. Actually, the blue print of who you are (incl. your major life lessons) is already fully developed 5 month before you are born and imprinted in your fingertips. Whether you consult with a masterful astrologist, astronomer, numerologist, life coach, hand-analyst, intuitive, etc. they will be able to decode your basic life purpose, the weaknesses you are confronted with, your life hurdles and, my personal favorite, your ‘juicy life dilemma’: The one thing you want the most and how you keep it away …

Once you know your personal gifts, a more complex question arises and it is this: How do you translate your unique abilities and talents into your life and work? Let’s say for example your life purpose is to be a passionate and persuasive communicator who loves adventure. There are many different ways to actualize these gifts: You could be a public speaker, a salesman, a writer who travels the world, a politician, even a singer … all different ways to practice your persuasive communication skills. Or, if you are a life coach like myself, you can use your skills to communicate passionately with your clients, persuade them to live a happier life while satisfying your hunger for adventure by traveling the globe teaching a variety of classes.

As you can see, once you know your life purpose, there is a number of ways to pursue it. How do you know which one is your path?

This is where the ability to be sensitive to your needs and to find out what lights you up comes in as a crucial measurement tool.

Your sensory awareness will tell you whether you want to use your passionate communication skills to talk to big crowds, write novels, sing, paint, or other means to express yourself. How? Your system will tell. You will get stimulated, maybe even nervous when you engage in the activities that bring you alive. Your eyes will sparkle when you talk about what you love and your enthusiasm will give it away.

Once you know your calling, explore it! Try out the various possibilities and ways to put it into practice. Make lists, talk to people, take seminars, learn the unique aspects of your gift, and always, always, take an inventory of what brings you alive. If it does not excite you, chances are, you aren’t on the right track.

If you have questions about this, let me know. I’d be happy to help.

Your Personal Calling - Quote No comments yet

Re-reading The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho I found this beautiful quote that I want to share with you:

“Like Santiago, the shepherd boy, we all need to be aware of our personal calling. What is a personal calling? It is God’s blessing, it is the path that God chose for you here on Earth. Whenever we do something that fills us with enthusiasm, we are following our legend. However, we don’t all have the courage to confront out own dream.”

Today Is Not My Day - Or, The Challenges of Working From Home No comments yet

Halfway through the day today I noticed that it wasn’t going to be a good one. In part this was due to me (who else) and sloppy planning (also referred to as ‘going with the flow’).

I had a long list of things I wanted to work on and somehow I could not get to them. The first distraction came when my 10-year old daughter called me on my promise to work with her on Math. She is skipping a grade this school year and so I gave in. Due to my eagerness (not hers), it took much longer than expected. Let’s say, I really got into it and was surprised to find out how much fun Math can be.

Next, my other daughter called from Europe where she is spending her summer. I had not talked to her in several weeks so this (unexpected) phone call took another big chunk of time out of my day. After that a Mourning Dove baby had fallen out of the nest and needed to be rescued … and on it went.

By the time I finally got around to my business I had not only lost a lot of juice and focus, I had also built up quite a bit of pressure (I had so much to do!). I started by checking a few things off my to do list, stuff that always makes me feel better, and got to work. But, no matter what I started, I ran into problems. I tried to fix things here and there and finally gave up.

I realized that I had to take the pressure off or it would just get worse. Energy first is my motto …  I also knew that I had to get some things done to feel better. Most of all, I had to let go of my expectation of being so effective, productive, in control, …

So, I relaxed, made myself a nice hot cup of tea, locked my door, and started over. I knew that once I was enjoying myself again, things would go my way. And if not, tomorrow is another day.

Wishing you a joyful and productive afternoon! Curious, how do you manage working from home?

It’s Easy to Forget Who You Are 1 comment

We recently moved. After living in a small desert oasis for three years we moved back to the city, Santa Monica to be precise, and something funny happened to me: I started to remember myself again. Not that I had totally forgotten who I was, but there was a part of me that had not been fully alive living in that small community.

The truth is, I am not a small town girl, never have been, probably never will be. I love being where the action is. When I am sitting in my office now, windows open, the California sun shining in, the buzz of the city in the distance, I feel happy. There are people out there, going places, doing things and I can meet them, talk to them, know them. It’s my life source, it’s the way I am wired.

For me it was a reminder of how easy it is to get lost in this big world of choices.

I did not grow up in a city but in a very small village in the Black Forest. While I loved roaming the woods behind our house, I never felt completely at ease there and I remember that even though I loved the sounds of the forest and the magical creatures of nature, it filled me with a deep sadness of something that was not me.

My first venture into a big city happened when I was 4 years old. My uncle came to visit. He brought with him a flair of unknown places and a fascinating way of speaking German. Before leaving he asked me if I wanted to come with him.  Most likely he meant it as a joke. Not for me, it wasn’t. I went into my room and packed my little suitcase. I was ready to discover the world.

My grandparents lived in Santiago de Chile and that’s where we went. I stayed for 8 month, turned 5, visited the next door kindergarten and LOVED all of it. My memories of that time are alive and vivid. I remember feeling internally light and happy. There was action, city noise and adventures to be found at every corner. People spoke in a strange language that I picked up easily. It was warm and sunny and the smells of the city fascinated me.

If you are a country person you may not understand. You may need nature and solitude to feel complete. We are all different and what fits for me may not fit for you. What is crucial is to get our lives just right to be fully happy. If you are an animal person, get a pet, if you love the country side, get out of the city. If you love getting up in front of people, find opportunities to do so. Every time you compromise, a part of you dies.

What if you don’t know what brings you alive? Experiment, try things out. A good coach can help you to remember yourself and reflect back to you what lights you up. Deep down you probably already know. You may not have been born into the right circumstances but you can certainly create them for yourself.

What are the things you need to be fully alive? I’d love to find out.
